What happened last week on “The Challenge”?

In a controversial season contested by an unproven cast that’s been met with some skepticism by fans, Episode 16 finally felt like “the one we’ve all been waiting for.” The real world beef between Nurys and Olivia has been a subject of speculation for months, and after episode 16, we finally have our answer.

Let’s rewind. In the Daily Challenge, TJ yet again reminds our players that the one who finishes last is headed straight home. The “End of the Line” daily tasks players with using a device to prevent them from dropping all the way off a rope while stopping as close to the bottom as possible. Ed got greedy here, and paid for it. All you really have to do to survive the challenge is not fall off the rope. James got off to a really bad start in the first heat by falling off the rope, so, all everyone else had to do to avoid instant elimination was drop a short distance and hold.

Unfortunately, Ed wanted back-to-back wins, and ended up dropping way too fast. In the end, he was eliminated, and James was safe.

Poor Horacio finds himself in second place again, and this time, his worst nightmare finished first: James. James loves the security, but wants none of the responsibility for what happens next, and as the house frantically maneuvers to establish a pecking order, it looks like there’s a real chance that Kyland and Horacio might dodge elimination this week.

But then, the unthinkable happens. At the house vote, Michele saves Olivia. Nurys breaths a sigh of relief, only for Olivia to turn around and save Moriah. Let’s not forget that it was Nurys’ gut-wrenching decision that saved Olivia over Horacio just one episode prior. Olivia is stony-faced, and it’s revealed via flashback that Jay and Michele made a last-minute deal with Olivia before the nomination.

It’s over after that. The voting precedes predictably, and it’s a heartbreaking trio of Nurys, Horacio and Kyland are headed to elimination. But fans were in for one more surprise. For all the talk of Kyland and Horacio being the best two male contenders in the house, it’s Nurys who comes out on top of this week’s obstacle course elimination. The men were stymied by a shapes puzzle, and the stakes were higher with both of them going home. They shared a tearful goodbye, and Nurys heads back to the house while Madalen Duke’s “How Villains Are Made” plays in the background. Nice touch, editing team.
