Editor's Note
The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers are set to clash at Super Bowl 2024, a.k.a. Super Bowl LVIII, but the clash is so much bigger than just one game. In this guide, I'll preview the matchup, and walk you through everything you need to know, from the biggest storylines and game day info, to ticket prices and the halftime show. It will be regularly updated with the latest coverage, so check back as the big game approaches.

The 2024 Super Bowl — a.k.a. Super Bowl LVIII or Super Bowl 58 — will star the No. 3 Kansas City Chiefs, defending their title against the No. 1 San Francisco 49ers in a rematch four years in the making on Sunday, February 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

In the 2024 NFL Playoffs Conference Championship round, the Chiefs held onto a 17-7 lead after breaking away in the second quarter to ultimately beat Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens 17-10. The mistake-prone Ravens were unable to break through with more than a fourth quarter field goal in a heartbreaking end to the season. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have clawed their way to a second consecutive Super Bowl, but this time they did it from the Wild Card Round. In 2023, the Chiefs were the No. 1 seeded AFC team, and earned a bye into the Divisional Round.

In the NFC Championship, Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers staged a huge 17-0 third period rally to overcome Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions 34-31. It was the second consecutive win from behind for these 49ers in the 2024 Playoffs, and the second win by just a three-point margin, after beating the Green Bay Packers 24-21 in the Divisional Round. Now the 49ers will try to win the Lombardi Trophy from the same team they faced, and lost to, at Super Bowl LIV.

Will Taylor Swift be at the Super Bowl?

Taylor Swift has a concert in Tokyo the day before Super Bowl LVIII, and while she has been a regular presence at Kansas City Chiefs games for beau Travis Kelce, getting from Tokyo to Las Vegas in less than 24 hours is no small feat. Barring delays and assuming an expedited private travel experience, Taylor could theoretically reach Las Vegas within 11-12 hours after her show in Tokyo, according to The Associated Press.

So we’re telling you, there’s a chance.

What are the biggest Super Bowl LVIII storylines?

You mean, apart from Taylor Swift? Here are some of the biggest storylines heading into the game:

Is Patrick Mahomes the new GOAT? It’s tough to contend with Tom Brady’s record, but if Mahomes claims a third Super Bowl ring, it will be impossible to keep him out of the conversation.

Brock Purdy’s rise from irrelevance: Purdy was the 262nd overall draft pick in 2022. Now, thanks to a combination of teammate injuries and outstanding play, he’s leading his team to the Super Bowl less than two years later.

Star power on the 49ers: The Chiefs may have Swift on the sidelines, but San Francisco has some of the biggest playmakers in the NFL, including RB Christian McCaffrey, TE George Kittle, WRs Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel and OT Trent Williams. The 49ers have so many ways to beat you, the question is, how will they do it.

Are the Chiefs already a “dynasty?” Is four Super Bowl appearances in five years (and two wins already) enough to call these Chiefs a “dynasty,” or do they need this third win first? Fans and detractors are using the 1990s Cowboys as a comparison, but even if the Chiefs lose, they still walk away with Patrick Mahomes, who is just 28 years old, and unlikely to stop winning any time soon.

Andy Reid’s spot in history: The Chiefs head coach will look to join the small and elite group of coaches who can claim three Lombardi Trophies, including Bill Belichick, Chuck Noll, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh.
